EXCLUSIVE: Q&A with Ana Tueme–Crisis Text Line Volunteer

Q: How did you first hear about Crisis Text Line?

A: During my high school years, I first became acquainted with the organization. This introduction coincided with a pivotal moment in my life when I was diagnosed with a mental illness. The compassionate guidance of both my therapist and the dedicated social workers involved in my care consistently emphasized the importance of reaching out to the organization during moments of crisis. Their encouragement and support not only aided in my personal journey but also fostered a deep appreciation for the organization’s mission and impact on individuals facing similar challenges.

Q: Did you ever utilize our service in the past before becoming a volunteer?

A: Indeed, I relied heavily on the service during my formative years, and to this day, I have the number saved as a contact in my phone! I turned to Crisis Textline during moments when I felt unable to confide in my usual support network of friends and family. The service provided a crucial outlet, offering me comfort and reassurance through the knowledge that there were individuals willing to listen, even if they were strangers. I valued the confidentiality and anonymity of the platform, which allowed me to express myself openly and without fear of judgment.

Q: Why did you decide to volunteer for a mental health organization?

A: My decision to volunteer for Crisis Text Line stemmed from a desire to pay forward the support I received. Having been a beneficiary of the organization’s services for years, I felt a deep-seated urge to give back, especially now that I have learned to manage my mental illness. Additionally, my aspiration to become a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) motivated me to volunteer. I believe that exposure to diverse crises through this volunteer experience will enrich my future practice, enabling me to offer comprehensive support to individuals across various communities once I am licensed.

Q: What would you say has been the biggest impact or reward about volunteering at Crisis Text Line?

A: The most fulfilling aspect of volunteering for the organization is the profound impact I know I’ve had on individuals navigating crises. I vividly recall numerous conversations where I provided support and comfort to texters, and knowing that my efforts made a positive difference remains deeply gratifying. Regardless of the nature of the crisis, the opportunity to assist others is always rewarding, reinforcing my commitment to continue offering aid and compassion wherever it is needed.

Q: What current challenges are you facing right now in regards to your mental health and how do you cope?

A: Currently, I am navigating challenges related to my mental illness, but I find solace in the support of my family and friends. To channel my energy positively, I’ve taken up practicing my cooking skills, experimenting with new dishes and recipes. Engaging in this new hobby has proven to be a helpful distraction from negative feelings. Additionally, I recently welcomed a puppy named Mona into my life. Mona has been a source of encouragement, motivating me to venture outdoors, engage in physical activity, and establish a more structured routine.
